A paper authored by electrical and computer engineering assistant professors Joshua San Miguel and Younghyun Kim and their students will appear in IEEE Micro magazine’s annual special issue “Top Picks from the 2020 Computer Architecture Conferences” slated for publication in May/June 2021.

The paper, titled “uGEMM: Unary Computing Architecture for GEMM Applications,” was published at the ACM/IEEE 47th Annual International Symposium on Computer Architecture. Inclusion in the special issue is considered among the highest honors in the computer architecture community. Out of over 100 papers published at conferences last year, the magazine selected only 12 deemed to have the highest potential for long-term impact on the research community and computer industry.

Other co-authors include ECE PhD students Di Wu, Jingjie Li, ECE undergraduate Ruokai Yin as well as Hsuan Hsiao, a PhD student at the University of Toronto.

“Our uGEMM unary computing project was a big undertaking. The concept of unary computing that we propose is very unconventional in the research community, so our students had to build a lot of new software infrastructure and tools from scratch,” says San Miguel. “We’re very proud to see the hard work of our students getting recognized with such a prestigious honor.”
