Engineering Physics Professor Emeritus William Vogelsang died July 9, 2019, at age 90.
After earning a bachelor’s degree from Nebraska Wesleyan, a master’s degree from Miami University of Ohio, and a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, Vogelsang, as a senior scientist, spent seven years as part of a team at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory working on the design and development of the first nuclear reactors used on U.S. submarines and aircraft carriers.
Vogelsang went on to have a long, fulfilling career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was a valued member of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics with a special interest in fusion technology and the education of his students. From 1990-1997, he was editor of the American Nuclear Society’s international research journal Nuclear Technology.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara, and their children, Margaret Sanders (Robert) and Tom (Kathy Moran); grandchildren Louisa Buck (Geoff), Billy Sanders (Martina), Adrienne Vogelsang; and great-granddaughter Josefina Fabian Sanders.
