The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has selected Chang-Beom Eom, Raymond R. Holton Chair Professor in Engineering and Theodore H. Geballe Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, to receive $1.7 million over five years through its Materials Synthesis Investigators of the Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Systems (EPiQS) Initiative. Eom is one of 13 scientists to be awarded funding through the Moore Materials Synthesis Investigators program in January 2020.
Intel co-founder Gordon Moore and his wife Betty Moore created the foundation to support scientific discovery, environmental conservation, patient improvements and preservation of the San Francisco Bay Area. The foundation’s goals are to take risks and make long-term and relatively large commitments to undertake challenges not accessible to many other organizations.
The EPiQS initiative is an integrated research program to accelerate progress in the field of quantum materials, enabling major scientific breakthroughs by providing some of the field’s most creative scientists with substantial resources and freedom to pursue challenging and novel research directions of their own choosing. The initiative supports experimental investigators at leading universities through five-year research grants to explore new synthesis routes and uncover new materials to propel development in the field.
Eom, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, specializes in nanostructure fabrications of novel materials and hetroepitaxy of complex thin films and heterostructure. A world-renowned expert in the field, Eom has most recently been recognized by the American Physical Society with the 2020 David Adler Lectureship Award in the Field of Materials Physics.
