The Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement (CQPI), in collaboration with UW Health and Geisinger Health System, has been awarded a five-year, $2.5 million grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The research, “Health IT-supported process for preventing and managing VTE,” focuses on VTE—venous thromboembolism—which is a frequent but preventable complication for hospitalized patients that can be potentially fatal. Industrial and Systems Engineering Procter & Gamble Bascom Professor in Total Quality Pascale Carayon will lead the team, which includes CQPI research scientists Ann Hundt and Peter Hoonakker, and ISyE Professor Doug Wiegmann, who will focus primarily on implementing a new sociotechnical systems approach for preventing and managing VTE.
