Working for the ULC
Working at the ULC will give you experiences which will benefit you academically and going into the future. While tutoring, you will further your education by reviewing previous courses and expanding your knowledge. You can acquire many transferable skills such as interpersonal communication, time management, and problem solving skills. In addition, you will gain personal connections throughout the College of Engineering by meeting and working with other students.
We typically hire at the end of the semester (December/May) for positions starting the following semester.
Job Description
- Lead and facilitate two PrEPS sessions per week. This includes: planning each PrEPS session with clear content and objectives; preparing worksheets for students, posting worksheets and solutions on PrEPS course webpage; giving a mini lecture; facilitating group discussions and problem-solving activities; collecting and reporting students’ attendance at PrEPS sessions.
- Compile course syllabus, handouts. Introduce yourself to professor and discuss goals of PrEPS.
- Attend course lectures and discussions, and take notes.
- Evaluate students’ learning and contact ULC director with general concerns.
- Administer mid-term evaluations and final surveys to get feedback on the effectiveness of PrEPS.
- Participate in required orientation and work day at the beginning of the semester.
- Attend and contribute to the weekly meetings by sharing handouts, responding to other faciltators’ experiences, problem-solving, feedback/evaluations, mentoring, implementing changes, etc.
Qualifications:
- Current UW-Madison Undergraduate Student. Engineering student preferred.
- Minimum GPA of 3.25.
- Minimum grade of “B” in the course to facilitate.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Previous tutoring experience preferred.
- One-semester required commitment if hired.
Courses: EMA 201, EMA 202/ME 240, PHYSICS 201, PHYSICS 202
Pay Rate and Time Commitment: $10.00/hour. PrEPS facilitators typically work approximately 10 structured hours per week. This includes attending the lecture of the course they are supporting in PrEPS.

Job Description
Do you want to help create a web service that will positively impact hundreds of students? If so, the Undergraduate Learning Center (ULC) has positions available for student programmers who are looking to gain real world programming experience. You will be part of a team working to create and maintain dynamic and interactive web applications that will be used to enhance the academic support services available to undergraduate students in the College of Engineering.
Minimum qualifications:
1) Current UW-Madison Student. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
2) Course grade of “B” or higher in CS 400.
3) Experience with object-oriented programming (OOP), either through Java or other programming languages.
4) A strong commitment to teamwork, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
5) A strong ability and desire to learn new programming languages and frameworks. Be able to read a substantial amount of code and understand how it works.
Preferred qualifications:
1) Experience with front-end web development: HTML, CSS or material-ui, and React.js or JavaScript).
2) Experience with back-end/server-side web development: PHP (PHP 7.2), SQL (mySQL) queries.
3) Experience with version control systems Git (add, comment, push, branch, merge).
4) Multiple semester commitment.
Pay Rate and Time Commitment: $10.00/hour. Programmers are expected to work approximately 10-12 hours per week. Once hired, new programmers are expected to participate in required orientation and training sessions. All programmers attend and contribute to weekly programmer meetings.
