I wouldn't use the expression “to give back” in describing my motivation; it suggests that I'm losing something in doing so, and I don’t feel that way. There are several factors that are behind my decision, but the most relevant is probably that I have a respect for academic striving and believe that it should be encouraged. I wanted my support to be close to the area that I was involved in during my attendance at UW-Madison. Support of the Engine Research Center and the mechanical engineering department is at least as important to me as the general association with UW-Madison.
