Through my parents, my church and various honor societies at UW-Madison, I was conditioned to believe that we have a privilege and a duty to ‘give back’ to improve our communities and our society. Judy and I feel blessed that we are able to do that using our time, talent and treasure.
My four years at UW-Madison provided an excellent foundation for graduate school at Princeton, my successful management career at Shell, and my current volunteer work with the Executive Service Corps of Houston (ESCH). ESCH brings best management practices to nonprofits in the Houston area.
Over the years we have helped the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering in many ways. Recently, we wanted to provide some additional financial support and learned about the specific needs for support of the summer lab. This six-week ‘rite of passage’ was a formative experience for me. We wanted to ensure that future students will also be able to benefit from summer lab. The program’s focus on teamwork, leadership, communication skills, and integration of engineering fundamentals helped me develop key strengths that have paid off over my career.
I have many fond memories of my time at UW-Madison. (I also have some other memories, like walking across campus fighting bitterly cold winter winds.) Among these are trips to the Rose Bowl in 1960 as a member of the UW Band and again as a senior in 1963 when five of us drove nonstop from Madison to Pasadena. We continue to enjoy watching the Badgers on TV. Two years ago we were able to attend the UW Rose Bowl pep rally in Santa Monica and cheer the band in the Rose Bowl Parade. Our now 5-year-old granddaughter was with us and she is now a huge Bucky fan!”
