I have derived so much in my lifetime due to the education I received at
UW-Madison that it’s hard to imagine what life would have been without it. I really love the university and like to think that my contributions help to make that kind of experience available to others as well.
I believe that engineering is a particularly important requirement for a country that is to succeed in this world. We have lost much of our ability to compete on a world economic basis at least partly because our industrial base is so diminished. Engineering skills are required to build this base back and I’d like to help in that cause by enabling young people to gain those skills.
Since the combination of tuition and state contributions do not begin to cover the costs of running the school, it is important that alumni offer their support to ensure a viable program is offered to students. Alumni are, after all, the beneficiaries of the support of past alumni and, as such, would seem to have a very real obligation to continue to help current students and faculty by financially contributing to a very active and vital school.
I have remained connected to UW-Madison by serving as president of the Badger alumni group in the Detroit area and later by serving as the local chairman raising funds through the Campaign for Wisconsin building drive a number of years ago. Since moving to Sedona, Arizona, it’s more difficult, but last year my wife and I hosted several football game viewings and tailgate parties for local alumni. It was a thrill to be united with other Wisconsin grads, most of whom we had never met. We are considering now what other events we might foster in the Sedona area.
