The memory of a professor from my student days: I learned suddenly, I believe from PERSPECTIVE, that Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Emeritus Jim Clapp had died. I remember that Jim was not only approachable to us students, but sincerely interested in us personally. Well, after I wrote a letter of condolence to his wife, Susan, one thing led to another and eventually I helped establish a memorial student scholarship in Jim’s name. My motivation was simple gratitude. Without a sound engineering degree I doubt I would have my present career achievements. It was gratifying to give the credit personally to Jim Clapp as well as to the University of Wisconsin. It’s undoubtedly difficult for an alum to remain connected personally with people back at the engineering campus. I’ve been fortunate to develop a relationship now with CEE Professor Jeff Russell and Dean Paul Peercy and know they appreciate this connection. They want to know what we are doing and thinking out here in the real world and in my case were even helpful to my business.
