Girl Scouts
We offer four different events for Girl Scout troops or individual Girl Scouts to come to the UW-Madison engineering campus and earn badges for their age level.
COMPUTER BADGE WORKSHOPS
These are approximately two-hour workshops for all levels of Girl Scouts where the girls complete activities required to earn their computer badges. These are held on a troop by troop basis as requested. Each workshop varies depending on the level of the troop.
- Brownies will have an opportunity to learn about engineering and SWE, and how and why
computers are used. They will also design a birthday invitation using Microsoft Word, and
play a short computer game. Following this will be an introduction to 'netiquette' and
internet safety, plus the opportunity to use the internet to look at web pages.
- Juniors will have the opportunity to learn about engineering and SWE, and how and why
computers are used. They will also play a short computer game, learn how to import a
picture and format using Microsoft Word. Following this will be an introduction to
etiquette and internet safety, plus the opportunity to use the internet to look at
web pages.
- Cadettes/Seniors will have the opportunity to learn about engineering and SWE, and how
and why computers are used. They will also design a brochure using Microsoft Word, and
learn about credit cards, spreadsheets, and a little bit of computer graphics in movies.
BROWNIE GIRL SCOUT SCIENCE BADGE DAY
This event is for Brownie Girl Scouts and is led by SWE along with one or two other engineering student organizations. It is held once a year, usually in the fall semester. The girls earn three science or engineering related badges during the day. We limit the registration to about 75 girls to keep groups small.
JUNIOR GIRL SCOUT SCIENCE BADGE DAY
"I did not like leaving. I met new people, learned interesting things, and had fun. What's not to like?" -past participant
This event is for Junior Girl Scouts and is led by SWE along with two other engineering student organizations. It is held at least once every semester (usually November and March/April) on a Saturday. The girls earn three science or engineering related badges during the day.
CADETTE/SENIOR INTEREST PROJECT DAY
This event will run similar to the Junior Girl Scout Science Badge Day, but the Cadettes and Seniors will earn one engineering related interest project during the day. This event is usually held once a year in the spring semester.
If you are interested in any of the above events or would like to get on our e-mail list, please contact us via e-mail at gsswe@cae.wisc.edu. In addition, if you have attended any of our programs in previous years, we would greatly appreciate any feedback that you can give us to make them better!
