About widget

widget serves as a point of nucleation to bring together students and faculty interested in the nascent field of synthetic biology and genetic engineering. We will:

  1. promote education and research in biological engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
  2. compete in the international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition

iGEM Competition

The iGEM competition was established at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004 to address whether simple biological systems might be built from standard, interchangeable parts in living cells.

The UW iGEM team holds biweekly meetings during the spring semester to learn biological engineering principles and to discuss and develop new ideas for research projects. The team will work full-time on a research project for 12 weeks over the summer in the labs of the faculty advisors with the help of a full-time technician. The team will travel to MIT in early November to present their results at the iGEM jamboree.
