Down-to-Earth Research
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment is to
test an adaptation of the Liquid Wall Radiation Shield used in
terrestrial applications of fusion technology. The experiment
proposes different methods of controlling the flow of the liquid in
a situation where gravity is not present. We hope to prove
that the shield produced can hold its shape through fluctuations in
gravity.
Method
We will fly the experiment on NASA's reduced gravity laboratory -
the
C-9
Weightless Wonder. Launched out of Houston, Texas, this
powerful airplane flies out to the Gulf of Mexico. Once there,
the pilot guns the engines, and aims high in the sky like a canon
shooting at the stars. Climbing very quickly in the sky, the
pilot slows down the engines, and allows the plane, its passengers,
and its experiments, to fly like a canon ball up into the sky - peak
- and fall back towards the Earth, before pulling out once again.
