UW-Madison Chapter Purpose

The purpose of this chapter shall be to promote among its members a self-sought increasing knowledge of metallurgy, materials science and engineering and all its branches; to assist its members in their academic endeavors; and to instill the professional pride in their chosen life work.

What is ASM International?

ASM International is a society whose mission is to gather, process and disseminate technical information. ASM fosters the understanding and application of engineered materials and their research, design, reliable manufacture, use and economic and social benefits. This is accomplished via a unique global information-sharing network of interaction among members in forums and meetings, education programs, and through publications and electronic media.

What is TMS?

Headquartered in the United States but international in both its membership and activities, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) is a professional organization that encompasses the entire range of materials and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its nearly 13,000 professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators, and administrators from more than 70 countries on six continents.

In support of its mission, TMS provides forums for the exchange of information; promotes technology transfer; promotes the education and development of current and future professionals; represents the profession in the accreditation of educational programs and in the registration of professional engineers (a U.S.-grounded activity); encourages professionalism, ethical behavior, and concern for the environment; and stimulates a worldwide sense of unity in the profession. A manifestation of this mission is the electronic medium TMS OnLine.

What is AFS?

The American Foundry Society seeks "to provide and promote knowledge and services that strengthen the metalcasting industry for the ultimate benefit of its customers and society." We are a multinational professional society which works to assists its members in all aspects of the metallurgical world. By helping companies through information, and future employees (students), AFS is ensuring a strong future for foundry and metallurgical practices.

How Do I Join?

A full-time student in good standing at a four-year degree-granting school in the United States, Canada, or Mexico may become a Joint ASM/TMS Student Member upon application and payment of dues. You can apply for the Joint ASM/TMS Student Membership online or pick up an application from the ASM/TMS & AFS bulletin board located outside of MS&E Rm. 265. The cost is $25 per year.
