• A Grant Recipient's Story:
  Academic Staff Professional Development Grant Strengthens Work Team, by Janice Czyscon

  In December 1997 six staff members from the Department of Engineering Professional Development's marketing, editing, and graphics units (the EPD promotions group) left behind the cold and snow of Madison to attend a conference at the Princess Resort in sunny San Diego.

  Each evening, as they swam in the outdoor pool of the resort, they acknowledged how happy they were that they submitted a proposal to the Academic Staff Professional Development Grant Program.

  Their efforts paid off. With money from the grant program and matching funds from their department, they participated in an excellent conference on lifelong learning. Attendance topped 950, with participants from all 50 states and Guam, 6 Canadian provinces, and five countries.

  With more than 70 concurrent sessions, the conference offered training targeted to each member of EPD's promotions group. They attended sessions on registration software, Internet marketing, designing brochures, developing successful new programs, creating integrated marketing plans, and developing emotional intelligence.

  They also enjoyed many hours together exploring San Diego during the festive holiday season. One evening they shared an authentic Mexican dinner at Casa de Bandini in Old Town. Another night they ventured to the Gaslamp Quarter for Italian cuisine at La Bella Luna. Visits to the famous San Diego Zoo, Christmas on the Prado in Balboa Park, and the beaches of San Diego created wonderful memories and the desire to return someday soon.
