CoE CASI (Committee on Academic Staff Issues) Meeting Highlights 9/17/2001
Present: S. Anderson, J. Czyscon, B. Dye, P. Farrell, L. Grossenbacher, J. Hendricks, M. Landretti, F. McTavish, P. Peercy, B. Peterson, J. Schowalter

The Employee Orientation Celebration scheduled for Friday 9/14 was postponed. The new date is not yet determined, but will probably be late October. This year both new and continuing employees are invited and encouraged to participate.

Academic Staff Professional Development Grant Program:
There will not be a call for proposals this fall, so the next opportunity will be a call in January with review in April for funding July through December.

Among the recent email distributions to the CoE CASI was the Wisconsin Week article about the Research and Instructional Professorial titles proposed for academic staff. Questions were raised as to whether there should be a College policy or guideline regarding their use, and if so, whether/how the CoE CASI should be involved in its development. This issue was added to the Issues & Topics list.

Communications Subcommittee Report and Discussion:
The committee has been working with Joyce on fine tuning the Coe CASI website, but it will not be finalized until after the APC election site is finished. Nevertheless, committee members were encouraged to look at the CoE CASI website in its current state and provide feedback.

Report from CoE CASI Campus Representative (J. Czyscon):
Two brownbag sessions have been scheduled for representatives of the various campus CASIs to meet with ASEC - one on 10/25/2001 and another on 4/25/2002. Both sessions are at noon in Union South. All CoE CASI members were encouraged to attend, as an opportunity to see the representatives and hear the issues of other CASIs. The CEBC is planning on attending the 10/25 session to request that all CASIs do climate surveys. This issue was added to the Issues & Topics list. J. Czyscon distributed copies of the "School/College Actions for Advancing the Campus Strategic Plan" at ASEC's request, as a basis for discussion and planning and conversation with the dean, as well as some comments from the Medical School CASI. This issue was added to the Issues & Topics list.

Professional Development Subcommittee Report and Discussion:
The subcommittee is planning to invite Don Schutt, Director of the Office of Human Resource Development (OHRD) to attend the next CoE CASI meeting, to give a brief presentation and engage in discussion.

Planning for 2001-2:
The Committee reviewed its Issues & Topics list, and added 3 items (as mentioned above): Response to the Campus Strategic Plan, Climate Survey, and the Research/Instructional Professorial academic staff titles. It was decided that the first CoE CASI activity will be to host a town meeting for all CoE academic staff, asking them to comment on the issues on the list, suggest other issues they consider important, and help CASI priorize its efforts for the coming year. The meeting will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m, on Wednesday, October 3, in 1610 Engineering Hall. L. Grossenbacher, F. McTavish, S. Anderson, and M. Landretti volunteered to organize the event.

CASI Annual Report:
J. Czyscon offered to develop a draft and forward it to the other committee members for review and comments.
