Technical Japanese: The Time is Now

American corporations are rapidly increasing their level of technical cooperation with Japanese firms. These corporations need professionals who can function effectively in a technical capacity with their Japanese counterparts. More engineers and engineering students are studying Japanese than ever before, but there are few opportunities to formalize that study in a way that will bring professional recognition. The Master of Engineering in Technical Japanese provides professionals or students with the knowledge and skills to interact effectively with Japanese counterparts in the technical or business arena.

Technical Japanese at UW-Madison

UW-Madison has been a leader in technical Japanese for more than 15 years. The aggressive use of distance education technology has been a hallmark of the technical Japanese program at Wisconsin for nearly a decade. Students and professionals enrolled in individual courses may work toward the Certificate in Technical Japanese Studies (18 credits) or the Master of Engineering in Technical Japanese (24 credits).

Degree requirements

To obtain the Master of Engineering in Technical Japanese, a candidate must complete at least 24 credits of approved coursework (beyond a B.S. degree) in technical Japanese, Japanese language, and technology development in Japan. All courses are offered regularly to students on the Madison campus and to professionals regardless of location.

All candidates must complete Intermediate Technical Japanese I and II (EPD 374 and EPD 375). The remaining six courses may be selected by the candidate. A number of options exist for people who wish to pursue different interests. At least six credits must come from courses numbered 500 or higher. No more than six credits of independent study (EPD 699) are permitted. A maximum of six credits may be transferred from other institutions.

Admission requirements

All applicants must satisfy the minimum admission requirements of the Graduate School:

  1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  2. An appropriate undergraduate major or equivalent evidence of suitable background for entering the proposed field.
  3. A minimum undergraduate grade-point average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours.
  4. Applicants whose native language is not English must provide scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable score on the TOEFL is 580.
  5. International applicants also must have a degree comparable to an approved U.S. bachelor's degree.

The following additional requirements must be satisfied in order to be admitted to the Master of Engineering in Technical Japanese program:

  1. An applicant should hold a BS degree in engineering or a related field. Applicants whose BS or BA is not in engineering must have a minimum of 16 undergraduate credit hours in science or engineering.
  2. An applicant is not required to submit scores from the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE).
  3. An applicant must submit three letters of recommendation and a personal statement outlining the match between the Master of Engineering in Technical Japanese and his/her professional goals.

Professor Davis's lectures are models of clarity in how to interpret and understand complex technical Japanese sentences. His methods of presentation are excellent with very clever usage of color and highlighting during the lectures which enhance rather than obscure the content. I feel that my ability to read technical Japanese in my field (as well as others—another great feature of the classes are the diversity of technical readings) has expanded greatly and I will find this to be of great value in my work.”
