Course objective:
Professionals will learn the business vocabulary and patterns of communication needed to conduct business in a Chinese-language environment. (Part 1 of a 2-course sequence.)
Course description:
In this course professionals will learn effective patterns of communication in Chinese in a business setting.
Dialogues, readings and exercises will provide a background in Chinese business culture and present scenarios typical of those encountered by foreigners conducting business in China.
Scenarios include both business-related activities—such as visiting customers, making formal introductions, and preparing for negotiations—and social events, such as attending a banquet and making a toast.
Essays (written in Chinese) will enhance cultural awareness by expanding upon models of behavior that are introduced in dialogues.
Exercises will reinforce sentence patterns from current and previous lessons.
Equal emphasis will be placed upon oral and written comrnunication.
Prerequisite:
EPD 306 (Basic Chinese for Professionals II)
Homework:
Weekly assignments to reinforce vocabulary and grammatical patterns.
Assignments include answering questions and composing brief messages.
Exams:
Three two-hour exams.
