Course objective:
For students to learn about a wide variety of engineering approaches that have advanced our understanding of biology at the scale of molecules, cells, tissues and organs. In addition, the course seeks to promote life long learning by helping students develop critical reading, writing, and thinking skills, which will enable them to understand new advances at the interface of biology and engineering in the future.
Course description:
The course consists of expert lectures every week on a wide range of topics at the interface of biology and engineering. Some lecturers will provide reading assignments in advance. The course is graded on a pass/fail basis.
Prerequisite:
A college-level biology course
Homework:
One 200 word summary of each lectures is required. In addition, three 1500-2000 word summaries (of three different lecturers) are required. These longer essays must be technically sound, grammatically correct, clear and cogent. They should be written in the style of a review article, not an informal or colloquial style. In addition, reading and referencing books, articles and texts (other than websites) typically will be required to earn an A grade.
