Sandra Shaw Courter, Principal Investigator

Dr. Sandra Courter

Dr. Courter is Director of the Engineer Learning Center and a member of the Department of Engineering Professional Development. Her area of research is engineering education, including assessment of student learning.  She teaches technical communication courses to undergraduate engineering students and coordinates professional development programs for faculty and teaching assistants.  She earned her BS in English Education, taught middle school English for five years, and earned her PhD in educational administration at UW-Madison.  As a member of the management team for CIRTL, she is jointly responsible for a course about teaching science and engineering. From 1998-2003, she was also a member of the management team for the Foundation Coalition at UW-Madison.  As co-principal investigator, she developed and implemented the program now known as the STEM Education Scholars Program.  In 1997, she initiated and developed a "Certificate for Teaching Scholarship in Higher Education," a predecessor of the current Delta Certificate in Teaching and Learning

Kevin Anderson

Through the past seven years Kevin taught science in California, where he earned the distinction of National Board Certified science teacher.  Previous to teaching he completed a master's degree in education at Stanford University and researched systemic school reform and maintaining reform efforts through changes in leadership.   Now at UW-Madison, his research interests include science education policy, teacher leadership and networking, and connections of K-12 teachers and students with real-world content experiences.  He is pursuings a PhD in Education Leadership and Policy Analysis, with a minor in science education. 

Traci M. Nathans-Kelly

Dr. Nathans-Kelly earned her PhD in 1997 in English. At that time she was also the Program Director for the Scientific and Technical Communication BS degree at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She came to UW-Madison to teach in the College of Engineering's Technical Communication program in 2000, where she teaches technical communication, technical editing, Web design, writing user manuals and other courses. She is active in the Society for Technical Communication as a Senior Member and part of the Committee on Global Strategies.  She also judges at the international level for publications contests for scholarly journals, scholarly articles, and information materials.  She regularly holds workshops (both online and face-to-face) for practicing engineers on how to improve their technical presentations. She co-teaches a graduate online technical communication course in the Masters of Engineering Professional Practice (MEPP) program for practicing engineers. 

Tom McGlamery

Tom McGlameryFor the past ten years, Dr. McGlamery has taught undergraduate courses in general and technical communication through the Department of Engineering Professional Development at UW-Madison.  He also consults for the private sector.  He has been actively involved in College of Engineering programs aimed at recruiting and supporting targeted students, and he is a participant in international studies programs aimed at diversifying the life-experiences of UW engineering graduates.  His scholarly interests include rhetoric, workplace communication, engineering ethics, and engineering education. 

Christine G. Nicometo

Christine Nicometo, MS, has taught technical communication courses for undergraduate and graduate students at the UW-Madison campus since 2003.  She received her master of science degree in rhetoric and technical communication from Michigan Technological University, where she taught technical communication and ESL courses.  She also taught ESL courses at Finlandia University where she was the director of a federal, TRIO, Student Support Services grant. Her interests lie in discovering how technology alters the ways we communicate, learn, and teach.  She has directed nationally funded K-12 teaching-with-technology workshops and is currently the director of the New Educator's Orientation workshop in the College of Engineering at UW-Madison.  She has co-taught a graduate online technical communications course in the MEPP program for practicing engineers since 2004, and is an active member of ASEE and STC.
