Mechanical Engineering Building

Next to ERB is the stately Mechanical Engineering Building, the first structure on the present engineering campus that was built specifically for engineering. It is headquarters for the Mechanical Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering departments, as well as many laboratories and a recently refurbished student study area. And more uniquely, ME houses the Department of Engineering Physics working nuclear reactor.

The 70-plus-year-old building is scheduled for a facelift beginning in 2003. Actually, "facelift" is an understatement: The $33 million project will completely gut the old building and place a four-story building in the center, on the site of the old "sawtooth" section, built in 1921. the remainder of the old building will be completely renovated, preserving the building's original facade.
