"BETWEEN CLASSES"

Statue, Between Classes

FINDING IT: "Between Classes" is located beneath the Engineering Hall overhang.

Finely detailed bronze models distinguish sculptor J. Seward Johnson’s work, yet secure its place in everyday life. Such is the case with the sculpture, "Between Classes,” that Johnson created specially for the college. Throughout the years, thousands have kept this special “student” company. Visitors swarm around the lifelike bronze sculpture at such events as Engineering EXPO and Career Connection, while campus “regulars” daily pause to sit at its base.

It’s a lesson in virtual reality: This chap’s backpack looks so lifelike that you might catch a concerned citizen attempting to pick it up. And thanks to some creative students, the sculpture sometimes acquires a seasonal look: Badger apparel, a plush Santa hat and even a grass skirt to celebrate spring break.

Donated by The Grainger Foundation.
Installed in fall 1994.
