Joy Altwies joins the Department of Engineering Professional Development as an assistant faculty associate. She earned her master's degree in mechanical engineering from UW-Madison's Solar Energy Laboratory in 1998 and worked for five years as a consulting engineer at Farnsworth Group, Inc., Madison, specializing in building commissioning and high-performance buildings. Her research interests include green buildings, high-performance buildings, sustainable construction, building commissioning, and HVAC&R systems.

Civil and Environmental Engineering
After four years on the faculty at Louisiana State University, Dante Fratta joins the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as an assistant professor, with a Geological Engineering Program affiliation. Fratta earned his PhD in civil and environmental engineering from Georgia Tech in 1999 and worked as a visiting assistant professor at the Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Program. His research interests include near-surface geophysics, experimental geotechnical engineering, and wave-based process monitoring of material behavior and processes.

Irena Knezevic joins the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as an assistant professor. She completed her PhD in electrical engineering at Arizona State University in 2004; her research interests include quantum transport theory, decoherence in nanostructures, quantum information, femtosecond relaxation properties of materials, and semiconductor device simulation.

Volkan Kursun (5K JPG)

Electrical and Computer Engineering
Volkan Kursun is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He earned his PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Rochester in 2004. Previously he was a graduate technical intern at Intel's microprocessor research laboratories, a research engineer in the Xerox Corporation Inkjet Printers Unit, and a research engineer at the Defense Industries Research and Development Institute of the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey. His research interest include low power, low voltage and high performance integrated circuit design; multiple supply and threshold voltage CMOS circuit techniques, supply voltage, temperature and process variation tolerant integrated circuit design; modeling of nanometer semiconductor devices, and emerging integrated circuit technologies.

Christos T. Maravelias (5K JPG)

Christos Maravelias joins the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering with a 2004 PhD in chemical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. An assistant professor, his research interests include planning and scheduling, supply chain management, new product development, mixed-integer programming, logic-based optimization, and systems biology.

Dane Morgan (10K JPG)

Materials Science and Engineering
Dane Morgan is an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He earned his PhD in Physics in 1998 from the University of California, Berkeley. He was a postdoctoral researcher and later, a research associate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests include computational materials design, quantum mechanical atomistic modeling, data mining, functional ceramics, electrochemical systems (batteries, fuel cells), and biochemical systems.

Annette Muetze joins the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as an assistant professor and associate director of the Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium. A researcher for a year at the Newcastle University upon Tyne, Great Britain, she earned her PhD in electric drives in 2004 from the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany. Muetze's research interests include electric drives and machines and power electronics.

William L. Murphy (7K JPG)

William L. Murphy is an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, with affiliations with pharmacology and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He earned his PhD in 1998 in biomedical engineering from the University of Michigan and completed postdoctoral studies in chemistry in 2002 at the University of Chicago. Murphy's research interests include bioinspired materials, tissue engineering, drug delivery and gene therapy, and stem cell differentiation.

Izabela Szlufarska (13K JPG)

An assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Izabela Szlufarska earned her PhD in 2002 in theoretical condensed matter physics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Since then, she has been a postdoctoral researcher in the Collaboratory for Advanced Computing and Simulations (CACS) at the University of Southern California, conducting computer simulations of materials on high-end supercomputers. Her research interests include large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of structural and dynamical correlations in covalent glasses, ceramics and nanophase composites; multiscale simulations of processes in nanoscale devices, nanoindentation, nanotribology, many-body effects in the optical and transport properties of low-dimensional systems, Quantum Hall Effect, and high-performance computing and data mining.

Carl Steven Vieth (14K JPG)

Carl S. Vieth, who received his MS in curriculum and instruction from UW-Madison in 1984 and completed PhD coursework in urban education at UW-Milwaukee, joins the Department of Engineering Professional Development as an assistant faculty associate and director of corporate education. Previously, he was a senior healthcare consultant and director of training at GE Healthcare, and has held senior management positions with Covenant Healthcare, Milwaukee, and clinical positions with Columbia-St. Mary's Milwaukee. Vieth's research interest include adult education, curriculum and instruction, and educational policy studies.
