More than 1,200 engineering students from throughout the country will descend on the UW-Madison campus this month to take part in the 150th National Student Conference of The American Society of Civil Engineers.

The event will be held June 21-24, and includes students, civil and government leaders, industry representatives and research institute participants. They will gather to share the latest in leading-edge technologies and talk about the future of civil and environmental engineering.

Among the major events: the National Concrete Canoe Competition, to be held on Lake Mendota near the Red Gym and Memorial Union Terrace; the National Student Steel Bridge Competition, to be held at the Kohl Center; and the Daniel W. Mead contest, based on student papers and presentations on civil and environmental engineering. This is the first year that all three major ASCE national contests will be held in one location at the same time.

There will also be contests in balsa wood bridge building, concrete ball bowling, creating clean water and surveying.

Student participants will also have the chance to tour major Wisconsin civic projects such as Miller Stadium in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Art Museum and its famous new addition by architect Santiago Calatrava and the Overture Project arts district in downtown Madison.

In addition to ASCE, major event sponsors are Master Builders Technologies Inc., an Ohio-based construction company, and the American Institute of Steel Construction.

Other institutions that will serve as hosts for the conference include UW-Milwaukee, UW-Platteville, Marquette University and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The conference also is receiving support from the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
