Eighteen College of Engineering students were recently honored for their work in studying electric power engineering.

The students were honored with the 2002 The Grainger Power Engineering Awards Program, given at a dinner held April 2 at the Fluno Center for Executive Education. The honorees included students receiving their BS, MS, and PhD degrees from the College of Engineering.

Recipients were given a plaque and an award of $6,000. This is the sixth year of the awards; a total of 98 students have received the awards since their inception in 1997.

The awards are intended to reward highly qualified and motivated students following programs of study in areas such as electric machines and drive systems, industrial motion control, power electronics, and electric power systems.

The Grainger Foundation established the awards to honor students who earn degrees specializing in electric power engineering. David Grainger, President of the Grainger Foundation, received his BS in electrical engineering from the College of Engineering in 1950. Grainger is senior chairman of the board of W.W. Grainger Inc., a leader in the distribution of maintenance, repair and operating supplies and related information to the commercial, industrial, contractor and institutional markets in North America.
