When UW-Madison rolls out the red carpet for its weekend-long open
house, the College of Engineering will entertain visitors with a
variety of family-friendly exhibits, tours, hands-on activities and
more, Aug. 19, noon to 4 p.m. From the college's off-road vehicles,
vehicles of the future and concrete canoes to melted metals,
manipulated materials and a nuclear reactor, check out these rain or
shine events on and around Engineering Mall:
- Baja Car: Off - Roading Student Style - See a rugged, four-wheeled
off-road vehicle built and raced by students.
- Concrete Canoe - View the award-winning concrete canoe built by
civil-engineering students.
- Engineering Drawing - Sign up to win UW-Madison College of
Engineering coffee mugs, "Future Engineer" T-shirts and more.
- Formula Car: Student Racing in the Fast Lane - See a
formula-style car designed, built and raced by students.
- Fountain Photos - Get your photo taken in front of the famous
engineering fountain.
- Future Truck: The Chevrolet Suburban of Tomorrow - See the
student-modified, fuel-efficient hybrid-electric Chevrolet Suburban.
- Heart Healthy: Probe a Transparent Heart - Use a model of a
transparent heart to learn more about how the heart works, and even
thread a catheter through it.
- Legoland: The Engineering Campus in Legos - Build your own Lego
creations and see a Lego model of the engineering campus.
- Nanomaterials: Relating the Tiny World to the Bigger
Picture - Learn how scientists manipulate materials to make everyday
objects work.
- The Science of Slime - Kids can make a polymer "slime" using a few simple
household ingredients.
- Water Power: The Story of the Engineering Fountain - Learn about
the history, construction and features of the Engineering fountain.
- Melting Metals: Foundry Tour and Pour - Watch students pour
white-hot metal into molds in the engineering foundry.
- Powering Up: Tour a Nuclear Reactor - Tour the College of
Engineering's 1-megawatt pool reactor.
Campuswide weekend events, Aug. 18-20, include musical entertainment
and film, art and photo exhibits, hands-on demonstrations, tours, a
health fair, delicious food, train excursions, farm wagon rides and
even free ice cream. On Sunday, there is a free youth soccer clinic
and team scrimmages, followed by Badger Football Family Fun Day. Free
parking will be available in UW lots, and free shuttle buses will be
running on Saturday. Visitors can pick up detailed information at the
event, or plan an itinerary in advance using the schedules and maps at
www.openhouse.wisc.edu.
