Throngs of middle and high school students took notes and asked questions in Engineering Hall lobby in late October as they perused displays of inventions created by African-Americans over the past two hundred years.

The Black Inventor Museum is a traveling exhibit based in Los Angeles that features biographical sketches of inventors and scale models of their inventions along with copies of patent documents. The National Society of Black Engineers-Wisconsin Black Engineering Student Society (NSBE-WBESS) raised the money to bring the exhibit to the college.

Included in the exhibit were inventions such as the lawn mower, gas mask, fire extinguisher, roller coaster and the light bulb among others.

Electrical engineering graduate student and WBESS vice president Eric J. Harris says the exhibit promotes diversity.

"Showing the contributions of black scientists shows how progress can and has come from every culture in the country," Harris said.

The museum has been on display in churches, universities and libraries all across the country. It operates as a non-profit corporation founded by book publisher Lady Sala S. Shabazz.
