The college's Geological Engineering Program garnered a mention in the October 6 issue of Science magazine. The article, titled, "Grad Schools Preview the Shape of PhD's to Come," discussed trends in graduate study programs, including the emphasis on interdisciplinary structure. The GLE graduate program, instituted last fall, involves faculty from geology, physics and several engineering departments.

Administered by the college's Interdisciplinary Advisory Committee for Geological Engineering, the program offers specific study areas including developing geologic resources such as water, energy and minerals; designing structures in soil and rock formations for dams, tunnels and mines; mitigating geologic hazards such as earthquakes, landslides and volcanoes; and protecting the environment through proper waste disposal, erosion control and groundwater quality maintenance.

The 11/9 lecture on art and technology by sculptor William Conrad Severson discussed in Mondays's "Headlines" has been postponed until December.
