Saw Safety
aw Safety
Powerful, invaluable tools, table saws also can be dangerous, even for the most careful operators. "Kickback" occurs when a material jams in the saw, then ejects forcefully, injuring the operator or damaging nearby objects. And while table saws are equipped with anti-kickback mechanisms, they can damage the material or prohibit its movement through the saw. Without impeding materials' passage through the saw, the AKSYS (anti-kickback system) employs sensors that detect an impending kickback and mechanics that stop the saw blade before it happens. Electrical and computer engineering student Brandon Ripley and mechanical engineering student Steven Nackers developed AKSYS.
