While a pneumatic roofing nailer makes easier work of applying asphalt shingles, removing layers of old shingles requires a great deal of muscle, sweat and determination.
Mechanical engineering
student Tom Johnson found that out the hard way when the shingle-remover he and friends rented turned out to be a flat piece of metal attached to a long handle.
Taking his inspiration from the nailer, Johnson linked a pneumatically driven cylinder to a metal shearing plate.
His Shingle Stripper also has an adjustable handle, enabling its user to remove shingles on steep-pitched roofs from the relative safety of a ladder or scaffold.
