Geological engineering alum receives presidential honor
Samantha Hansen, who earned her bachelor's degree in geological engineering from UW-Madison in 2000 and a master's in geology and geophysics here in 2002, was among 102 researchers who recently received Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. Hansen, currently an assistant professor of geological sciences at the University of Alabama, formally received the honor from U.S. President Barack Obama in an April 14, 2014, ceremony at the White House. The award is the highest the U.S. government bestows on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their careers. Hansen's fellow PECASE winners this year included UW-Madison Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering Jennifer Reed.
