Carayon named to Institute of Medicine committee
Pascale Carayon, the Procter & Gamble Bascom professor of industrial and systems engineering, recently was named to the Institute of Medicine committee on diagnostic errors in healthcare. The committee will evaluate current diagnostic error and develop recommendations to reduce future errors.
Carayon hopes her involvement with the committee will help people understand that diagnosis is a process that happens over time and involves multiple people. It’s a process, she says, that can improve through engineering. “I hope I can help the medical community understand the benefits of an engineering approach,” she says, “where you dissect the system and the processes involved in it.”
