Rowlands receives Felix Zandman Award from SEM
Mechanical Engineering Professor Bob Rowlands has received the Felix Zandman Award from the Society for Experimental Mechanics. Rowlands received the award in recognition of recent use of birefringent coating for stress analysis of a bolted wood joint/connection. Rowlands says that by applying a very thin pliable plastic coating, which has optical properties that change with stress or strain, to the bolted wood structure, it was possible to determine the strains in the coating.
The award consists of a plaque and a donation given in the recipient's name to the SEM Education Foundation. Established in 1989, the award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of measurements or applications utilizing photoelastic coatings.
