Zhou and Brennan receive NSF grant to help asthma patients manage healthcare

The National Science Foundation has awarded a $475,000 exploratory project grant to Industrial and Systems Engineering Professor Shiyu Zhou and Moehlman Bascom Professor Patti Brennan. Awarded through the Smart and Connect Health program, this three-year project, “Smart asthma management: Statistical modeling, prognostics, and intervention decision making,” is focused on creating an asthma management information infrastructure in which patients can log their symptoms, medicine usage and vital physiological signals through a website or smartphone app within the Smart Asthma Management (SAM) system. The two hope this SAM project will contribute predictive technologies that can reduce the cost and improve the quality of healthcare, particularly chronic illness management, throughout the United States.
