Mechanical engineers collaborate with Wisconsin company to ID weld defects

The National Science Foundation has awarded Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Michael Zinn, Associate Professor Frank Pfefferkorn, and Nicola Ferrier of Argonne National Laboratory a three-year $374,880 grant to develop techniques for real-time friction stir weld defect detection. The grant, “Enabling real-time detection and identification of friction stir welding defects through the use of physics-based process dynamic modeling,” is a collaborative effort with Friction Stir Link, Inc. of Brookfield, Wisconsin, which seeks to develop, qualify and validate defect detection techniques based on the underlying process dynamics.
