New interdisciplinary collaboration will develop coaching program for surgical excellence

Industrial and Systems Engineering and Biomedical Engineering Professor Rob Radwin and Industrial and Systems Engineering Professor Doug Wiegmann are embarking on an interdisciplinary project with Dr. Carla Pugh and Associate Professor Caprice Greenberg in the Department of Surgery to develop a coaching program to help Wisconsin surgeons achieve and maintain surgical excellence throughout their careers. With a total of $550,000 in grants from the Collaborative Health Sciences Program and the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, the coaching program will draw from a unique collaboration between the departments of industrial and systems engineering, surgery, athletics, music and education. The team also will develop a methodology for quantifying surgeons' skill levels.
