FTI team leads U.S. ITER design effort
Fusion Technology Institute Research Professor Mohamed Sawan and his colleagues Professor Paul Wilson, Associate Scientist Tim Bohm, and Assistant Researcher Ed Marriot were awarded a $960,000 three-year contract by the U.S. Department of Energy. The team will represent the United States in designing the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in France. Sawan has been the lead U.S. investigator regarding ITER nuclear analysis for several years. He is collaborating with scientists in Europe, Japan, Russia, India, China, and South Korea. The ITER project is in the midst of building a 500 MW test reactor that will be the forerunner of commercial fusion power plants by the middle of the 21st century.
