Student honors and educational advances

Racing and exhibiting a 20-foot, 176-pound boat, Descendent, the Badger Concrete Canoe Team earned its fifth consecutive national title at the American Society of Civil Engineers 20th annual National Concrete Canoe Competition in June. As a result of its win, the team was invited to participate in—and won—the 30th annual Dutch Concrete Canoe Challenge in September.

The Formula SAE Racing team took first place at the international competition in Detroit, in which 130 schools from 11 countries on five continents battled for the prestigious SAE Foundation Cup. The team also earned the first-place Ricardo Powertrain Award, second-place Timken Engineering Friction Award, and the second-place Goodyear Best Performance Award.

In the third year of the Challenge X, competition, the UW-Madison Hybrid Vehicle Team earned second place out of 17 participating schools with its re-engineered Chevrolet Equinox, a parallel biodiesel electric hybrid. The 1.9 liter turbocharged engine runs on B20, a biodiesel fuel. The U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors sponsor the competition.

The Human Powered Vehicle Team (HPVT) submitted two vehicles to the ASME 2007 competition in May at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Team Hello Bucky, a leg-powered vehicle, placed in all three races—utility, sprint and endurance—setting new records for the UW-Madison team. Team Arm and Badger, the first solely arm-powered vehicle entered in competition, won first place in design and third place overall in the utility class.

UW-Madison engineers placed third out of 43 teams that participated in the 2007 National Student Steel Bridge Competition at California State University, Northridge. The competition challenged university teams from across the country in categories that included construction speed, lightness, stiffness, economy, display and efficiency.

More than 8,000 people, including waves of school-age children, visited the engineering campus April 19-21 for Engineering EXPO 2007. Trebuchets: Mechanical Marvels, the Ladder CAT, Muscles in Motion, and Race the Robot won student exhibit awards.

Working with Assistant Dean for Diversity Affairs Steven Clark, Rockwell Automation has agreed to sponsor five full-time College of Engineering scholarships for underrepresented students from the Milwaukee area. Rockwell will renew the scholarships for each year of the students’ academic careers, provided they remain in the College of Engineering.
