MATERIALS RESEARCH SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CENTER (MRSEC)
-
The Materials Research Science & Engineering Center (MRSEC) on
Nanostructured Materials & Interfaces, composed of interdisciplinary
research groups (IRG), carries out research in the detailed formation,
characterization and exploitation of materials at the nanoscale. These
groups represent multidisciplinary, collaborative research efforts in
advanced materials science. The center also supports small "seed"
projects.
-
IRG1 and IRG2 are concerned with materials science associated with the
fundamental mechanisms of materials integration on silicon and the
role that grain boundaries and the electronic structure play in
determining the critical current density of polycrystalline
high-temperature superconductors respectively.
-
IRG3 focuses on the formation and use of nanostructured materials as
interfaces to biology.
-
The MRSEC involves some of the best faculty at the university and is
genuinely interdisciplinary, involving more than 35 faculty and staff
members from five departments, collaborating with scientists from
industry and other universities.
-
The center supports a wide variety of
educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students,
including summer internships for undergraduates within the center
research groups.
