Faculty AwardsReid F. Cooper was elected a Fellow of the Mineralogocial Society of America in recognition for his research contributions in mineral physics and igneous petrology. He was also awarded the Polygon Engineering Council's Outstanding Instructor Award for Materials Science and Engineering for 1996-97. Bezalel C. Haimson received the Rock Mechanics Award from the Society of Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) for his research achievements in rock mechanics and rock engineering. He was also appointed Associate Editor of the Journal of Geological Research and appointed to the editorial board of the International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences. He was reappointed for a three-year term to the National Academy of Sciences Committee for Rock Mechanics. Y. Austin Chang was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering. He also received the Champion H. Mathewson medal at the 1996 Annual Materials, Metals and Material Society meeting held in Anaheim, CA in February 1997. In June 1996, he was awarded an Honorary Professorship by the Central South University of Technology in Changsha, Hunan, China. He also received the Albert Sauveur Achievement Award at the Annual ASM International Meeting held in Cincinnati, Ohio. John H. Perepezko received the Forschungspreise Award from the Alexander von Humbolt Foundation. Candidates for this prestigious award are nominated by German scientists and the awardees are selected on the basis of the significance of their research accomplishments. The award is intended to promote long-term cooperation with German researchers. David C. Larbalestier was awarded a Grainger Professorship in Superconductors. This chair is funded by the Grainger Foundation and recognizes Larbalestier's contributions in both low- and high-temperature superconductors. Max G. Lagally was awarded the Bascom Professorship for a third five-year period and was recognized as an Outstanding Alumnus by The Pennsylvania State University for his scientific contributions. Sindo Kou was named ASM Fellow for his contributions to research and education in the area of transport phenomena in materials processing.
