Chung Donation Supports Cast Metals Research
Do Won Chung, a 1970 Metallurgical Engineering graduate and 1995 recipient of the College of Engineering's Distinguished Service Award, presented a grant of $50,000 to The University of Wisconsin-Madison. The funds are to be used for the Cast Metals Laboratory Fund under the direction of Professor Carl R. Loper, Jr., Jr. The donation was made by Chung with the comment that he is "proud and always thankful to the school which guided me during my years." Upon graduation, Do Won Chung joined Kangwon Industries, Ltd., in Seoul, Korea. At that time, Kangwon was engaged in anthracite coal mining operations in Korea and had a small foundry that manufactured replacement parts for its mines. Today, Kangwon has developed into one of the major steel mills in Asia specializing in shaped components produced in two mills located in Pohang in southeast Korea. Additionally, Kangwon is a major supplier of steel mill rolls and the principle manufacturer of crusher components in Korea. Do Won Chung serves as Vice Chairman of Kangwon which now employs close to 4,500 people. We congratulate Do Won Chung on his success and thank him for his contribution supporting cast metal research. His gratitude and loyalty to the University of Wisconsin-Madison are greatly appreciated.
