    Summary

I study property-structure relationships with emphasis on mechanical properties. Over the years I have published in creep theory, creep-fatigue interaction, corrosion, and the mechanical properties of thin films, surface layers, and other microscopic specimens. More recently I have moved into properties of biological materials including the mechanical and electrical properties of wood.

A recurrent theme of my mechanical properties research is the development of nanoindentation as a tool for characterizing mechanical properties at the micro-scale. I have evolved nanoindentation creep into a spectroscopy method capable of isolating the kinetic signatures of deformation mechanisms in microscopic specimens.
