    Summary

We are characterizing the morphology of the graphite phase formed during the solidification of cast irons and determining chemical and process-related parameters affecting these structures. These programs entail the production of specific castings and the evaluation of the structures developed using a wide range of optical and electron-optical techniques as well as assessing the resultant mechanical properties.

An extension of these studies involves procedures to produce graphite having a predetermined crystallographic orientation as a result of solidification processes. Additional studies relating to the cast irons concern factors (alloying and thermal processing) affecting the matrix structure and the modeling of the development of the matrix and associated properties.

Eutectic modification in aluminum-silicon alloys and the growth of primary silicon in aluminum casting alloys also are being studied in an attempt to clarify the mechanisms involved in these transformations.

Model development of solidification processes, an important phase of process control, is being created in association with industrial and laboratory operations.
