Course objectives

The main objective of the course is to provide a perspective on high temperature materials in terms of their design, properties, processing and selection for structural applications.An integrated analysis of several phenomena (e.g. diffusion, phase transformations, dislocation motion and oxidation) is considered in order to account for material behavior and performance.

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

This course builds on the fundamentals of structure-property-processing-performance relationships that students obtained in the prerequisites. It develops student experience in applying the fundamentals to the design, analysis and interpretation of high temperature materials performance. Students use Materials Science and Engineering concepts and tools to evaluate high temperature materials and to diagnose material-related problems that are specific to elevated temperatures and formulate solutions.

Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Extended homework problem assignments (graded), a midterm and a final exam and a project assignment evaluate the students' ability; (1) to analyze and interpret elevated temperature materials performance;(2)to diagnose material-related problems that are specific to elevated temperatures and formulate solutions and (3) to select materials designs for high temperature applications.
