Course Prerequisite(s)

CHEM 341 or equivalent
Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Students should have knowledge of basic organic chemistry covered in CHEM 341. They should be able to recognize simple compounds and functionalities from chemical structure.

Textbook: �Polymers: Chemistry and Physics of Modern Materials�, 2nd edition, J.M.G.Cowie (Chapman and Hall, 1991). Other References: �Fundamentals of Polymer Science" by Paul C. Painter and Michael M. Coleman, publisher is Technomic Publishing Company, Inc. �Principles of Polymerization�, 3rd edition, George Odian (Wiley Interscience). "Introduction to Polymers," Young, R. A., and Lovell, P. A., Second Edition, Chapman and Hall, 1991.
Course objectives

Introduction to fundamental polymer chemistry and physics terminologies. � Special emphasis is on bringing out the structure-property relationship in electronic and photonic polymers. � Applicability of the role of electronic and optical properties of polymers in material selection for devices.
Topics covered

Nature of Polymeric Materials: Basic definitions, polymer classification, principal uses of thermoplastics, thermosetting resins, crosslinked elastomers. (1 lecture) � Polymer Characterization: Molecular weight definitions and branching, determination of molecular weight of polymers. (3 lectures) + 1 invited talk � Polymer Synthesis: Addition, polycondensation, anionic and Ziegler-Natta polymerizations, industrial methods of polymerization. (3 lectures) � Block Copolymers and Random Copolymers: Synthesis of block copolymers, thermodynamic principles of self-assembly, principle use of self-assembled nanostructured materials. (3 lectures) � Glass transition: the glassy state, theories and experimental determination. (1 lecture) � Mechanical properties of polymers: Rubber-like elasticity; linear viscoelasticity; time- temperature superposition; failure mechanisms; yielding, crazing & cracking. (1 lecture) � Polymers for optoelectronics: Fundamentals of conjugated polymers (1 lecture), charge transport mechanism as compared to hard materials (1 invited talk), material requirement and fundamentals of thin film transistors, light emitting diodes, non-linear optical and electro-optic materials (4 lectures). Introduction to molecular electronics and self-assembled monolayers, perspective on an emerging new field.(1 lecture)
Class/laboratory schedule

Two 75 minutes lecture schedules per week.
Relationship of course to undergraduate degree program objectives and outcomes: This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.
This course emphasizes the structure-property relationship in polymers with a focus on electronic and photonic polymers. � The course curriculum is aimed at developing the ability to apply knowledge of chemistry, physics and thermodynamics to the electronic and optical properties of polymeric materials. � The relationship of electronic and optical properties to the material selection for specific organic devices.
Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Two mid-term exam plus a final. Exams will account for approximately 60% of the course grade. � There will be problem sets about once every two weeks. Problems sets will account for approximately 20% of the course grade. � Presentation by students on any literature topic related to polymers for 10-15 minutes in-class will account for 20% of the grade.
