401 Special Topics in Materials Science and Engineering. 1-3 cr. Special topics of interest to students in materials science and engineering. P:So standing. Mechanics of Materials for Materials Engineers. I.

Math 222
Math 319
Physics 201 or Equivalent

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Experience with basic egineering math skills including vector analysis, differential and integral calculus, ordinary differential equations, elementary matrix multiplication and determinants
Freshman-level physics including force equilibrium

Textbook(s) and/or other required material

Crandahl, Dahl, and LArdner, "An Introduction to the Mechanics of Solids" 2nd Edition, McGraw-Hill

Course objectives

Course Objective: It is the instructor's intention to...

provide students in engineering and science with a broad, but practical and useful overview of solid mechanics relevant to understanding mechanical properties issues.

Course Outcomes: Students must be able to...

understand systems of forces and be able to draw free-body diagrams.

understand the concepts of tensor stress and strain.

understand the concepts of equilibrium and compatability

analyze/understand simple solid mechanics problems.

appreciate the range of material response to stress, up to and including failure.

Topics covered

Vectors
Systems of forces and equilibrium of a body
Loading, displacements and elastic energy
Forces and moments transmitted by slender members
Stress
Stress transformations, Mohr's Circle
Strain and strain transformations, compatibility
Indicial notation
Stress and strain in spherical and cylindrical coordinates
Constitutive relations for elasticity
Complete equations including thermal strains
Yield & failure criteria

Two 75 minute sections per week

This course contributes primarily to the students' knowledge of college-level mathematics and/or basic sciences, but does not provide experimental experience.

This is an introductory course. The emphasis is on basic material and problem-solving, and there is little coverage of ABET's supplementary topics (economic, environmental, etc)
