379 Materials Systems and Design Project. I;2cr. Conceptual projects which illustrate the principles of materials selection and application in case studies selected from engineering practice. Emphasis on creativity, application of sound metallurgical principles, analysis and presentation of results. P:MS&E 350 or 351, MS&E 360, 361, 362 & Sr st or cons inst.

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Students should have completed the majority of the undergraduate core curriculum, specifically the thermodynamics/kinetics sequence (MS&E 330, 331), the physical metallurgy sequence (MS&E 351 & 352), and the basic laboratory sequence (MS&E 360, 361, 362)

Course objectives

The course seeks to promote (1) understanding of real problems in materials science and engineering, (2) creativity in solving open-ended, ill-defined problems, and (3) practice in critical thinking and written and oral communication skills.
