Catalog Description: 371 Materials Science and Engineering Problem Solving II. II; 3cr. Application of advanced spreadsheet features to the solution of complex materials science and engineering problems, including transport phenomena and microstructural characterization. Emphasis will be on algorithm development, structural programming and model validation. P:MS&E 271.

MS&E 330

Prerequisite knowledge and/or skills

Thermodynamics, structure and property relations in solids.
Textbook(s) and/or other required material

Notes, laboratory exercise packets, and other course materials prepared by F.J. Bradley
Course objectives

Develop computer fluency in using common computer tools for problem solving, data analysis and information processing and presentation.
Gain experience in dealing with ill-defined open-ended engineering problems.
Develop the problem organization skills needed to formulate such problems in a manner that facilitates a computer program solution.
Acquire algorithm development and programming skills needed to implement a computer program solution.
Topics covered

Basic and select advanced features of productivity and equation solving computer tools.
Object oriented programming and the Microsoft Office object models.
Fundamentals of VBA language syntax.
Problem organization: problem analysis charts, structure charts, IPO charts, pseudocode, flow charts, and algorithms.
Class/laboratory schedule

two 3 hour computer class/laboratories per week

An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics and physics to the formulation of complex materials science and engineering problems requiring a computer program solution [ABET:3a] An ability to design a system to meet desired needs (project involving the design and development of a computer application) [ABET:3c] An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems [ABET:3e] An ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering and computing tools necessary for engineering practice (Excel, Access, Visual Basic for Applications programming of the Microsoft Office object model) [ABET:3k]
Assessment of student progress toward course objectives

Two three hours exams covering problem formulation and Excel, Access, and VBA skills
Class project
Instructor assessment of individual students based on student engagement and contribution to learning environment
