351 Materials ScienceStructure and Property Relations in Solids. I; 3cr. The basic atomic and electronic structure of solids. Bonding, imperfections and diffusion. Dislocation theory, deformation and fracture. P:Chem 104 or equiv.

Course objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide the foundation needed to explore the discipline of materials science and engineering as an undergraduate student. Specific objectives are:
To develop the students' knowledge of the language of materials science and engineering.
To develop the students' knowledge of how the structure of materials is described technically, including crystallography, microstructure, defects, and phase diagrams
To develop the students knowledge of how the properties of materials are described technically
To introduce the concepts of structure-property relationships

Atomic Bonding, Bond Energy, Bond Stiffness
Crystallography; Metal, Cermamic, Semiconductor, and Polymer Crystal Structures; Polymer structure
Point Defects, Dislocations
Diffusion
Phase Diagrams
Mechanical Deformation: Elastic Deformation in Metals,Ceramics, and Polymers; Plastic Deformation by Yielding and Creep; Viscoelastic Behavior; Fracture
Electronic Structure and Electrical Properties: Conductors and Semiconductors, Insulators, Ferroelectrics, Piezoelectrics
Magnetic Structure and Properties

Class/laboratory schedule

Lecture: 3 hours per week
Optional Discussion Section: 1 hour per week

This course primarily serves students in the department. The information below describes how the course contributes to the undergraduate program objectives.

This course introduces students to the concepts of structure-property-process-performance relationships. It builds directly on first year math and chemistry to establish a foundation for in-depth study of materials science and engineering concepts and tools that students will use in their professional careers.

Three exams composed of word problems that examine the students' mastery of:
The language of materials science and engineering
The key components of the structure of materials
How properties of materials are described quantitatively
How structure and properties are related
