331 Transport Phenomena in Materials. II;3cr. Basic principles of fluid flow, heat transfer and diffusion are introduced. Practical examples relevant to metallurgical and mining engineering are given. P:MS&E 330.

ability to apply knowledge of mathematics (calculus and differential equations) and physics (laws of conservations of mass, momentum and energy) to transport phenomena related to materials [ABET:3a] ability to analyze transport phenomena related to materials, by formulating the problems mathematically (into differential equations with proper boundary conditions) and solving them analytically or with the help of equation-solving tools [ABET:3e, 3k] ability to design materials processing (e.g., casting, welding, heat treating, crystal growth and semiconductor processing) based on trasport phenomena [ABET: 3c] knowledge of contemporary issues in transport phenomena in materials processing, e.g., computer simulation of materials processing [ABET: 3j]

Two mid-term exams on transport phenomena; students expected to be able to define transport problems with relevant governing equations and boundary conditions and find analytical solutions to the problems
Final exam on applications of transport phenomena to materials processing; students expected to be able to define some materials processing problems with relevant governing equations and proper boundary conditions
Ten graded homework assignments on the principles and applications of transport phenomena
