Departmental Requirements / Who Should Apply

Admission Basics:

  1. All standards of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Graduate School apply (see the graduate application form).
  2. GRE scores are required for admission into the department. A GRE score (Verbal + Quantitative) must total 1100 or better and Analytical must be 3.5 or better. Applicants with scores less than 1100 and 3.5 should retake the exam or supply reasons for their low score with the application.
  3. Prospective students must have a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a B.S. degree from a department in the physical sciences and M.E. equivalency in the specific area of study for the Masters degree plus departmental approval. Students with B.S. degrees in other engineering and natural science disciplines will be considered for admission on an individual basis. Upon acceptance, such students are often required to complete one or more courses in addition to degree requirements to satisfy any deficiencies.
  4. Students need a minimum grade point average of 3.00 based on the 4.00 point system or equivalent for the last 60(+) credits taken towards the undergraduate degree.
  5. A nominal credit of 0.05 grade point average per year may be added to an applicant's admission GPA for the applicant's work experience in physical sciences or engineering fields. The total credit may not exceed 0.35 (7 years experience). In order for an applicant to take advantage of this provision, the candidate must submit to the Departmental Graduate Committee a resume of activities, publications, if any, positions held, etc. The Graduate Committee may choose to interview the candidate personally.
  6. The ME Department does not require letters of recommendation (3) for admission for all applying students, but they are highly recommended. (See more information under Availability of Graduate Support.)

  3. The Department of Mechanical Engineering will nominate candidates for departmental/university Fellowships. The candidates will be chosen from students who have been admitted to the graduate program.
  4. Students applying for either a Fellowship or Assistantship are required to provide three letters of recommendation.
  5. All prospective students who are interested in visiting the UW campus are welcome to contact faculty and arrange a visit.
